DRAGONS’ DEN HOPEFUL SECURES INVESTMENT
Nottingham based Rico Mexican Kitchen has secured investment a matter of days before appearing on Dragons’ Den. Rico Mexican Kitchen founder, Marcela Flores-Newburn, was seen serenading the Dragons along with a Mariachi band on Sunday 21st August, hoping to receive investment of £75,000 in exchange for 20 percent of her business. The money was to develop her premium range of authentic Mexican food and to bring new types of Mexican food to the UK.
A group of Northamptonshire-based investors have provided funding this week to help Rico Mexican Kitchen with marketing and PR, product development, branding and supporting the brand’s drive into supermarkets, days before Dragons’ Den is aired.
David Haycock, a director of the investment group said: “We really believe in Rico Mexican Kitchen’s product range and in the work Marcela is doing, not only supporting the growers in Mexico and Britain, but also in making authentic Mexican food available to consumers. We are looking forward to helping her in her quest by funding what is necessary to get the brand and products out there.”
Marcela Flores-Newburn, who is originally from Monterrey, Mexico said: “This is such an exciting week! Not only did I get the opportunity to appear on Dragons’ Den, but I’ve also found the investment the business needed to flourish. Our products are genuinely Mexican, which is something completely new in this food category and previously unavailable. There is a great deal of interest in Mexican food with fajitas and burritos now a dinner time favourite for many but I feel now is the time to introduce the ‘real deal’ to consumers and increase the flavours and food on offer.”
Products currently available at a number of independent retailers include Salsa Verde, Mild and Tasty Salsa, Chipotle Xtra Hot Salsa, Spicy Beans, and Mexican Mole Sauce. Rico Mexican Kitchen has also introduced tamales to the UK market; a maize dough parcel filled with any number of ingredients and wrapped in a corn husk. Tamales have been around for over 5,000 years and were even enjoyed by the Aztecs.

TAMALES in the UK!
Have you ever tried Tamales?
They are the World's first ever grab and go food!
Just imagine, if you were an Aztec or a Mayan on your way to work to build pyramids,
what would you take as a pack-up lunch?
Of course, you would take Tamales. Yes, a bit like a Mexican Cornish Pasty. Tamales
are made with a maize dough (therefore naaturally gluten-free) and tasty fillings
such as spicy chicken and Mole sauce, or Pork Salsa Verde, and we also make wonderful
vegetarian and vegan Tamales.
Each Rico Mexican Kitchen Tamal is hand made to authentic, artisan recipes and wrapped
in a corn husk, then steamed.
Try Tamales in London at Wholefoods Market high St Kensington, Wholefoods Market
Clapham Junction, and soon in the other Wholefoods Market branches and other locations.
In Derby, find them at Soundbites on 11, Morledge. In Manchester. try Unicron Grocery.
